JOHNSTON LIONS CLUB SPONSORS THE WEEKLY FARMERS' MARKET
Each Tuesday from
the end of May until the first week of October over 30 vendors set up their
tents at Johnston City Hall parking lot to provide Johnston residents with
fresh produce, baked good, jams and jellies, kettle korn, fine crafts and
other seasonal goodies. This event is sponsored by the Johnston Lions Club
and proceeds are donated to the City of Johnston for its tree and
beautification projects. Over $3000 is donated each year, thanks to Lions
Club members who volunteer their time to advertise, set up signs, prepare
the site for the Market each day and help with logistics during the Market.
Members of the Community are treated to the very freshest Iowa grown produce
and the home baked goods and get to meet the growers and bakers. A perfect
match for a Tuesday afternoon. The Market is in its 16th year.
This year the Johnston Farmers' Market has new and exciting and delicious additions. Beginning Tuesday, May 29th, over 30 vendors will provide seasonal, fresh picked fruits and vegetables, wonderful baked goods, fudge, salsa, and fine hand crafted items. We will have a new BBQ Chef, local resident John Bagby will be stoking up his smoker and grill for pulled pork sandwiches, turkey legs and ribs. Local author, Deanna Reed will provide a storytime featuring her book "Skally Wags" , the story of her dog's visit to the big truck to get her haircut and a shampoo! Other stories under the tent will aso be offered and children are encouraged to bring their own favorite books to be read aloud. Another addition this year will be Portraits by Nicole, who brings her easel to the Market for shoppers to view her artwork. They can bring at least a 4" X 6" photo of children, individuals or pets for her to take home to sketch. She does great work and her portraits are reasonable and the likeness is incredible. We hope you'll make the Farmers' Market a regular Tuesday stop for the freshest produce and baked goods. Bring a lawn chair and listen to the live music, or have your BBQ on picnic tables on the lawn. Other events are in the planning stages. This unique Market is sponsored by the Johnston Lions Club, and all proceeds go toward the City's Residential Tree Program.
